Cartel Quick gets narrow Ruidoso Futurity win

Amanda Greer

Sergio Enriquez’s Cartel Quick scored the closest of decisions over KH Logax Inc.’s homebred You N How Many More to post the 7-1 upset win in the record Grade 1, $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

The previous record purse for the Ruidoso Futurity was $600,000 set last year.

With Tanner Thedford in saddle for his biggest career victory, Cartel Quick raced the 350 yards in :17.498 to grab the win by the shortest of noses.

Three Wild Dreams was one-half length behind the top-two finishers for third in the field of 10 two-year-old hopefuls.

“This is a good horse,” said Thedford. “I knew that I had it at the wire.”

Cartel Quick, a son of Teller Cartel, made his career debut in the 18th of 25 Ruidoso Futurity trials and came up with a one-length win. His time of :17.428 was the seventh-fastest qualifying time

The Alonso Orozco-trained colt did not make it back to the winner’s circle due to stress and exhaustion. He was vanned off from near the winner’s circle as per New Mexico racing procedures for the horse’s welfare. He was cooled down with buckets of water before walking into the van.

Cartel Quick was purchased for $10,000 in last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale and picked up $315,000 for the narrow win.

Cartel Quick now is the only horse with the opportunity to take the $4 million All American Triple Crown Bonus. He would be the first horse to earn the bonus if he can win the $1 million Rainbow Futurity and the $2.6 million All American Futurity. The winner’s share from the three races and the bonus exceeds $6 million.

You N How Many More, ridden by Jaime Parga Leos, was also making his second career start after taking his trial by one-and-three-quarter lengths for trainer Juan Gonzalez. The gray son of Chicks Regard was the third-fastest qualifier with a :17.347 time.

Third-place finisher Three Wild Dreams, a gelding by Tres Seis, made his fifth start for trainer Chris Zamora. He finished fourth in the West Texas Futurity and then won his maiden in his Ruidoso Futurity trial.

Fastest qualifier and 2-1 favorite One Quick Eagle lost all chance when he was repeatedly bumped in tight quarters and finished ninth.

The complete order of finish was Cartel Quick, You N How Many More, Three Wild Dreams, El Senor Lucero, Quick Dynasty, Sufired, Strategic Weapon, Feature Lauren, One Quick Eagle and Carters Disco.

In the $20,000 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Juvenile, Julian Aragon’s Dashin Little Guy won by one-half length while under a strong hold by jockey Felipe Garcia-Luna.

It was the second win from four starts for the Dashin Bye son from the Lillian Silva stable. He had won his West Texas Futurity trial and raced to a fifth-place finish in the West Texas Futurity.

Gbh Big Henry finished second and Full Blown Easy was third in the nine-horse field.

Dashin Little Guy had the 350-yard test under control by the halfway mark and Garcia-Luna had him geared down in the final 50 yards. They were timed in :17.440 for the 350 yards.

The next probable start for the horses in the Ruidoso Futurity and the Ruidoso Juvenile are the trials to the 400-yard Rainbow Futurity. They will be held on July 4-5 and the horses with the five-fastest times from each day qualifying for the July 21 finals.

Racing runs on a Friday through Monday schedule at Ruidoso Downs with a 1 p.m. first post time. There is always free parking and free general admission.
