The 2015 class of owner/breeder Jerry Windham, trainer Russell Harris, jockey James Dreyer and the horse Mr Jess Perry were inducted into the Ruidoso Downs’ Racehorse Hall of Fame on Friday night at Ruidoso Downs.
“It was a celebratory night filled with comradery,” Hall of Fame curator Ty Wyant said. “It’s an excellent 2015 class with an historic horse and three men who not only succeeded in horseracing, but gave back to racing.”
Every year, one owner/breeder, trainer, jockey and horse are inducted into the Hall of Fame. It is located at Ruidoso Downs and is open during racing days (Friday through Monday until Labor Day) and there is no admission charge.
Jerry Windham was the 50th president of the American Quarter Horse Association and is an influential breeder and owner. He bred and raced world champion Stolis Winner. The gelding won the All American Futurity and the Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs and retired as quarter horse racing’s all-time money earner at the time at $2,235,161. He was named world champion as the two-year-old on the strength of his Ruidoso Downs wins.
Windham bred last year’s Rainbow Futurity winner Trendi and was part-owner of 2013 champion two-year-old filly Kates Dynasty.
Harris has found success in California, Texas and at Ruidoso Downs. He trained the iconic mare Florentine, winner of the Rainbow Derby and the World’s Championship Classic in successive 1987 starts at Ruidoso Downs. In the World’s Championship Classic she was the only female and the only three-year-old and she defeated older males.
An Alabama native, Harris also won the 2000 Ruidoso Futurity with Fightin Jane and the 2006 Rainbow Futurity with Big Time Hero.
Harris has won at least one Grade 1 race in each of the latest four decades. He served four terms on the AQHA Racing Council and on numerous AQHA committees.
James Dreyer worked in the Los Alamitos Race Course racing office and is a Los Alamitos steward since his retirement from race riding.
At Ruidoso Downs, Dreyer won the first Rainbow Futurity aboard Double Queen and was third in the 1961 All American Futurity aboard Golden Note.
At Los Alamitos, Dreyer and world champion Charger Bar won the Go Man Go twice, the Los Alamitos Championship twice, the first Vessels Maturity, the Los Alamitos Derby and the Miss Princess.
Jim also won the Los Alamitos Championship four times and the Los Alamitos Derby on Go Josie Go, the Go Man Go on Go Derussa Go and the Pomona Futurity (now the Ed Burke Futurity) on Golden Note.
On the track, Mr Jess Perry was a champion and set two track records as a two-year-old.
