RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (June 15, 2014) – Tony Pennington’s Alsono, the 4-5 favorite, took the lead from the start and went on to score his second stakes win in three starts in the $40,000 Norgor Thoroughbred Derby at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday afternoon.
The Elvin Gonzalez-ridden Alsono covered the six furlongs in 1:10.24.
The Tom Squad tried to make it a tighter finish with a late run, however came up one length short. Blackout was three quarters of a length behind The Tom Squad for third.
Alsono took charge of the race from the inside post position. The colt used his natural speed to take him to the lead out of the gate and Gonzalez had a steady hold entering the turn. The son of Limehouse maintained his advantage on the turn and entering the stretch. Then The Tom Squad made his bid. He was closing ground, however never seriously threatened Alsono.
The Justin Evans-trained Alsono has been on a roll with four wins and a second-place finish from six outs this year. After an allowance win to start the year at Sunland Park, he moved up to the stakes division and won the $50,000 KHEY Sprint by two lengths.
After a sixth-place finish at 5-1 odds in the $120,000 Mine That Bird Derby, he won the $35,000 SunRay Park Casino Handicap. He made his most recent start in the $40,000 Arapahoe Park Inaugural Handicap and came up a nose short for second as the 4-5 favorite.
