Carter Sets All-Time Record For Quarter Horse Victories

Amanda Greer

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 23, 2014) – Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. established a new all-time record for wins by a quarter horse jockey when he guided Tempting Destiny to victory in the fifth trial to the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity on Friday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

It was win number 3,632 and erased the record he had shared with retired jockey Alvin “Bubba” Brossette. He equaled the record at Ruidoso Downs in Friday’s third race when he won aboard Lethal Express.

Carter has a record of more than 23,000 quarter horse mounts and those mounts have earned a record $64.8 million. The 10-time AQHA champion jockey is a member of the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame.

“The money record is related to the growth of quarter horse racing with inflated purses. That was easier,” said Carter. “There is only one way to win a race and that is one at a time.

“This record was set over the long haul, by being as good as I can be every day.”

Carter became a full-time jockey in the summer of 1986 and has won at least 100 races per year since 1987. “I’ve steered clear of injuries and I know how hard that is,” he said.

At Ruidoso Downs, he has won every Grade 1 futurity or derby. He has two wins in the All American Futurity and victories in the All American Derby, Rainbow Futurity, Rainbow Derby, Ruidoso Futurity and Ruidoso Derby. His All American Futurity wins came with Falling In Loveagain (1998) and Stolis Winner (2008).

“Ruidoso is the place that makes you famous. The dream and goal of every quarter horse jockey is to win here. I’ve been fortunate to win the All American (Futurity) twice and, hopefully, can win it again. But, if I had never won the All American Futurity, I would feel unfulfilled.”

Carter said that he has enjoyed the chase for the all-time record. “My goodness, how often will this happen? Twenty-five years? Thirty years?” he said.

Opening weekend racing runs at Ruidoso Downs runs through Monday, Memorial Day. First post time is 1 p.m. daily.
