Champ Kates Dynasty Makes Seasonal Debut On Saturday in Trials to Record Ruidoso Derby

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 17, 2015) — Jerry Windham, Billy Smith and Pat Guthrie’s reigning champion two-year-old filly Kates Dynasty makes her 2014 debut when she headlines the 10 trials to the record $943,127 Ruidoso Derby on Saturday, May 24 at Ruidoso Downs.

The previous record purse for the 400-yard Ruidoso Derby was $822,753 set last year.

Supporting the Ruidoso Derby trials is the $30,000 Fine Loom Handicap. It is contested over 870 yards with the fast thoroughbred Safe Trip facing the promising quarter horse Storm Chasor.

First post time is 1 p.m. and the trials will run as the second through the 11th races on the 12-race program. The Fine Loom goes as the first race.

There is always free parking and free general admission at Ruidoso Downs.

The opening Memorial Day weekend racing continues through Monday. Fillies and mares race six furlongs on Sunday in the $50,000 First Lady Handicap, the season’s initial thoroughbred stakes race.

Kates Dynasty not only became a championship contender, she became a champion when she made her final 2013 start. The Fdd Dynasty filly had earned less than $10,000 before the Grade 1, $1 million Texas Classic Futurity on November 9 and her world changed in the :19.404 it took her to race the 400 yards. She drew away as part of an 8-1 entry to dominate by one-and-three-quarter lengths and secure the champion two-year-old filly title. Her earnings after the Texas Classic Futurity victory soared to $454,090.

Trained by Mike Joiner, Kates Dynasty showed promise last summer at Ruidoso Downs. She won her Ruidoso Futurity trial and took her All American Futurity trial, however her times were not quick enough to qualify for the finals of either Grade 1 futurity.

Kates Dynasty drew into the fourth trial and has the outside post position with G.R. Carter Jr. aboard.

Jesus Avila and Jesus Cueva’s Turbulent Times makes his 2014 debut and his Ruidoso Downs debut after proving to be one the premier two-year-olds at Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California last year. The son of Furyofthewind won four of five 2013 outs with his sole defeat a fourth-place finish in the $1.1 million Ed Burke Million Futurity.

Turbulent Times closed out his two-year-old season with his career-best performance when he charged with a rush to win the $1 million Golden State Million Futurity, his most recent start on November 3.

Regular rider Eduardo Nicasio will be aboard Turbulent Times with the fifth post position in the sixth trial.

Valeriano Racing Stables supplied the two supplements at a cost $25,000 each: One Valiant Hero and Super Sporting Dash. One Valiant Hero won the $220,000 Oklahoma Derby and then was second in the $50,000 Bob Moore Stakes at Remington Park. Super Sporting Dash steps up in class after a Remington Park maiden win with a quick time of :17.351 for the 350 yards.

MCM Racing’s Safe Trip comes into the Fine Loom after setting a 1,000-yard track record in a $35,000 allowance race at Sunland Park on February 23. The Wes Martin-trained seven-year-old was timed in :50.968 while winning by six lengths. Last summer at Ruidoso Downs, the gelding won the $30,000 Master Salls Handicap over 870 yards by one-and-three-quarter lengths.

Safe Trip starts from the second post position and Casey Lambert is aboard.

Joan Dale Hubbard’s Storm Chasor, a four-year-old son of Attila’s Storm, won his 870-yard debut in January by seven lengths and then his Red Cell Sunland Park Distance Challenge trial by six-and-one-half lengths. The Paul Jones-trained gelding was second as the 1-2 choice in the Red Cell Sunland Park Distance Challenge in his latest effort.

Storm Chasor has the seventh post position and Esgar Ramirez rides.
