RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 19, 2014) — Champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr., a member of the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame, is likely to surpass the all-time record for quarter horse career wins when he next rides at Ruidoso Downs, starting on Thursday.

After the Sunday program at Remington Park, Carter has 3,629 career victories on quarter horses. He needs just three more victories to establish a new all-time record. The mark of 3,631 wins is currently held by retired Alvin “Bubba” Brossette.

The Ruidoso Downs summer season starts on Thursday with the first of two days of trials to the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity and on Saturday there are 10 trials to the Grade 1, $943,127 Ruidoso Derby. Carter has 25 mounts during those three days.

Carter is quarter horse racing’s all-time leading money-earning jockey with his mounts earnings more than $64.8 million from an all-time record of nearly 23,000 starts. He has also been voted the AQHA champion jockey 10 times (1993, 1997, 2003-2008, 2011-2012).

First post time on Thursday through Monday at Ruidoso Downs is 1 p.m. There is free parking and free general admission.
