Ruidoso Downs strongly endorses the New Mexico Racing Commission’s action during their meeting on July 22 to suspend the use of clenbuterol in quarter horses and thoroughbreds.
The clenbuterol suspension started on July 23, 2015.
“I really want to thank the New Mexico Racing Commission and appreciate the due diligence that the NMRC did on this most important issue. They did it right,” Ruidoso Downs’ general manager Shaun Hubbard said. “We completely support the elimination of clenbuterol.”
There will be an adjustment period that started on July 23 and runs through August 19, 2015. The purpose of the adjustment period is to allow time for clenbuterol to clear a horse’s system.
Trials for the Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity are on August 21-22. Trials for the Grade 1, $2.3 million (est.) All American Derby will be held on August 23. All of the trials will be held at Ruidoso Downs and the clenbuterol suspension will be enforced for both post-race samples and out-of-competition testing.
Clenbuterol, at the recommended dosage, treats breathing problems in horses. However, it has been abused because it also produces anabolic steroidal effects.
