Consistent Alsono Heads Norgor Derby at Ruidoso Downs

Amanda Greer

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (June 8, 2014) – Tony Pennington’s Alsono puts his consistent record on the line, along with his hot streak in stakes races, when he heads the $40,000 Norgor Derby at six furlongs on Sunday (June 15) at Ruidoso Downs.

First post time is 1 p.m. with free parking and free general admission.

Alsono has been on the board in 10 of 12 starts and may be in the best form of his career. The Justin Evans-trained colt took the $35,000 SunRay Park Casino Handicap by a hard-fought head on May 3 and then came back on May 25 at Arapahoe Park to overcome a bump and come within a nose of the win in the $40,000 Inaugural Handicap.

A son of Limehouse, Alsono put together back-to-back wins at Sunland Park earlier this year when he took an optional-claiming race by three-and-three-quarter lengths and then the $50,000 KHEY Handicap by two lengths. Each of those races were at the Norgor Derby distance of six furlongs.

Alsono starts from the inside post position with Miguel Perez aboard.

Owned by George Coleman, Jimmy Sanders and trainer Henry Dominguez; Cloud Harbor tries to rebound from an eighth-place effort behind Alsono in the SunRay Park Casino Handicap. Cloud Harbor has the past class. He won the 2013, $100,000 Gold Rush Futurity at Arapahoe Park and was second in the $55,000 Governor’s Cup Stakes at Zia Park last fall.

Regular rider Enrique Portillo Gomez handles the reins from the third post position.
