RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 18, 2014) – A rematch between the top-two finishers in the $50,000 Czaria Handicap – Hard To Resist and Cottagecupcake – is set for the $50,000 First Lady Handicap for fillies and mares over six furlongs on Sunday afternoon, May 25, at Ruidoso Downs.
The first thoroughbred stakes of the summer season will run as the 10th race on the 11-race card. First post time is 1 p.m. with free parking and free general admission.
Hard To Resist and Cottagecupcake finished only a nose apart in the six-furlong Czaria for distaffers. Cottagecupcake raced near the lead and then went to the front before Hard To Resist made a three-wide to get up a grab the narrow win at the wire in 1:09.47.
J. Kirk and Judy Robison’s Hard To Resist scored her fourth career win from 26 starts and pushed her earnings to $254,538. The daughter of Johnannesburg competed at the Grade 1 level at Keeneland and the Grade 2 level at Santa Anita before coming to New Mexico in March and joining the Henry Dominguez stable.
Hard To Resist has made two starts for Dominguez, both in distaff stakes at Sunland Park. She has responded with a troubled second in the Harry Henson Handicap and then catching Cottagecupcake in the Czaria.
Enrique Portillo Gomez rides Hard To Resist with the inside post position.
Champion Racing Stables and M. Carson’s Cottagecupcake has only made six starts and has shown consistency and improvement with four wins and a pair of seconds in her only stakes appearances. The Dallas Barton-trained mare has been the strong favorite in her latest four outs.
Cottagecupcake was second in the El Diaro Handicap three starts ago and then gamely took an optional-claiming race over one mile.
Regular Rider Carlos Madeira rides Cottagecupcake with the sixth post position.
