Divine Gift Gets Up At Wire To Take Zenyatta at Ruidoso Downs

Amanda Greer

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (June 22, 2014) – MCM Racing, LLC’s Divine Gift needed about every yard of the seven-and-one-half furlongs to get to the finish first in the $20,000 Zenyatta for fillies and mares on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

Divine Gift, ridden by Casey Lambert, was timed in 1:33.16 for her second straight win. The daughter of Divine Park won her maiden in her previous start when she destroyed a field of $8,000 maiden claimers by twenty-eight-and-one-half lengths at SunRay Park. She was claimed out of that stunning effort by trainer Weston Martin for her current connections.

Lambert kept Divine Gift in a stalking position and then angled the mare out entering the stretch. She rallied to catch Bright Town, who went to the front entering the final turn. Cottagecupcake, the 19-10 favorite, set the early pace and faded.

Divine Gift won by an increasing neck. It was three quarters of a length between second-place finisher Bright Town and third-place runner Lady Of Luck.

Runner-up Bright Town, a daughter of Speightstown, came into the Zenyatta off a third-place run in the $50,000 First Lady Handicap at Ruidoso Downs on May 25.
