RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 30, 2014) – Trainer Todd Fincher sends out two of his top prospects – Raider Red and Diabolical Dame – in the last of three trials to the $155,974 Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity over five furlongs at Ruidoso Downs on Friday (June 6) afternoon.
The Friday card starts one of the summer’s most important racing weekends at Ruidoso Downs.
It will be a super Saturday at Ruidoso Downs with the running of the record-setting $943,127 Ruidoso Derby and the first running of the $100,000 Mr Jess Perry live at the track and then the simulcast of California Chrome’s bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 in the Belmont Stakes.
Then, on Sunday, the summer futurity season starts with quarter horse racing’s top two-year-olds competing in the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity. The sport’s top-ranked two-year-old Kiss My Hocks, winner of the Sam Houston Futurity, heads the field.
First post time is 1 p.m. and there is free parking and free general admission at Ruidoso Downs.
The always strong Fincher stable should be highlighted in the third trial, which runs as the seventh race.
Brad King and Dale Taylor’s Raider Red has scored two impressive wins from his two starts. The gelding by Diabolical comes off a convincing three-and-one-half length score in the colt and gelding division of the Copper Top Futurity at Sunland Park. He made a three-wide moving after racing near the lead to get the win in :52.75 for the four-and-one-half furlongs.
Alfredo Juarez Jr., who has been aboard Raider Red in each of his starts, gets the call with the second post position.
Owned by Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant and Derrol Hubbard; Diabolical Dame made a very wide move in the fillies division of the Copper Top Futurity before settling for second place. The filly by Diabolical won her maiden at first asking when she won her Copper Top trial by one length with a late move.
Dusty Ryder Shepherd has the call with the fourth post position.
