Handsome Jack Flash Arrived Tuesday At Ruidoso Downs for Summer Campaign

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (April 29, 2014) — Reigning All American Futurity winner Handsome Jack Flash returned to the scene of his career-defining victory when he arrived at Ruidoso Downs on Tuesday afternoon.

Handsome Jack Flash joined the stable of Sleepy Gilbreath, a member of the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame, this past winter and will be campaigning for Gilbreath this summer.

“We’ve just been galloping him and he’s a real nice, laid-back kinda horse,” said Gilbreath as the gelding exited the van. “We’ll just point him to the Rainbow Derby.” He will then have the Grade 1, $2,000,000 (est.) All American Derby on his agenda.

Gilbreath has won two of the latest three Rainbow derbies and has a total of eight Rainbow Derby victories. He won the 2012 All American Derby with champion Ochoa and has three All American Derby scores.

Owned by the partnership of breeder Debra Laney with sisters Norma and Brenda Alvarez, Handsome Jack Flash became the pride of the Land of Enchantment last Labor Day when he became the third New Mexico-bred to win the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity, North America’s richest race for a two-year-old.

Before entering the All American Futurity trials, the gelding by First Moonflash won his first three starts against state-bred rivals. He capped that winning streak with a one-half length win in the $409,434 Zia Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.

Handsome Jack Flash made his first start against open horses in his All American Futurity trial and raced to a second-place finish behind Hes Relentless, runner-up in the Grade 1, $1 million Heritage Place Futurity.

With Jaime Leos aboard, Handsome Jack Flash scored an 8-1 upset in the All American Futurity when he surged to the neck win and earned $1.3 million of his career earnings of $1,482,271. The All American Futurity was his most recent start.

The Ruidoso Downs summer season begins on May 22 with the first of two days of trails to the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity.
