Kiss My Hocks Stands Out In Ruidoso Futurity Trials

Amanda Greer

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 22, 2014) – Conda Maze and Tyler Graham’s Sam Houston Futurity winner Kiss My Hocks made a stunning Ruidoso Downs debut when he won his trial to the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity by three lengths with the fastest-qualifying time on Thursday afternoon.

Kiss My Hocks raced the 350 yards in :17.281 for the top time from the12 trials.

The horses with the five-fastest times from Thursday’s trials join the five-fastest qualifiers from Friday’s 12 trials in the Ruidoso Futurity on June 8.

Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. scored one win and moved within one win of Alvin “Bubba” Brossette’s all-time record of 3,631 quarter horse wins. Carter won the 11th trial aboard The Beast Within, but the time of :17.951 was not fast enough to qualify for the Ruidoso Futurity. He will be riding at Ruidoso Downs on Friday and Saturday.

Kiss My Hocks simply demolished his competition from the inside post position in the seventh trial. The impressive son of Tempting Dash quickly went to the front and then drew away for the easiest of victories under jockey Cody Jensen.

The Toby Keeton-trained colt came into the Ruidoso Futurity trials off of two stunning wins at Sam Houston Race Park in his only two starts. He broke a 12-year-old 330-yard track record in his first start when he won his Sam Houston Futurity trial in :16.433.

Then, in the Sam Houston Futurity, he ran a race similar to his Ruidoso Futurity trial. He started from the inside post position, broke sharply to gain the lead and go on to win the $564,000 futurity by one-half length.

The Sam Houston Futurity win earned him the number-two ranking in the weekly AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow weekly poll.

“He is just an unbelievable horse,” said Keeton. “You can’t ask for anything more. He is just a pleasure to train.

“We’ve had him up here (at Ruidoso’s 6,000 ft. altitude) for three weeks and he’s acclimated really well. He’s the real deal, the horse of a lifetime.”

Second-fastest qualifier Jm Famous Master also has stakes experience. The J&M Racing and Farm-owned son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon came off a third-place run in the Grade 2, $267,651 West Texas Futurity.

He won the eighth trial in :17.348 with a one-and-three-quarter-length advantage. Alonso Rivera was up for trainer Jose Muela.

The remaining three qualifiers are Bodacious Eagle (:17.382), Madmax (:17.448) and Separate Dynasty (:17.461).
