Memphis D Nasty Top Qualifier On Second Day of Ruidoso Futurity Trials

Ty Wyant

Evaristo Sanchez’s Memphs D Nasty put up :17.731 time for 350 yards in the third of 16 trials and no other horse challenged that time in the second of two days of trials to the Grade 1, $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity on a windy Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

The horses with the top-five times from Saturday’s trials join the five-fastest horses from Friday’s 16 trials as eligible to compete in the 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity on June 7. The $50,000 Ruidoso Juvenile will be held on the same program for horses who did not qualify for the futurity finals.

It was the second-straight day of impressive figures at Ruidoso Downs.

The attendance of 4606 was a 70 percent increase over the 2706 fans a year ago on the second day of Ruidoso Futurity trials.

The handle was $987,999 for 16 races and the average per race was $61,750, which was up 35 percent. The total handle in 2014 was $550,014 on 12 races.

Memphis D Nasty, a daughter of Fdd Dynasty, absolutely dominated her trial with a stunning three-and-one-half-length win under Jose Ortiz while making her first start.

The Mario Sanchez-trained miss showed her potential in the Ruidoso Downs’ training race when she won with a :15.72 time for the 300 yards.

Scott and Monica Jones’ Kobys Wagon jumped up and raced to the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.842 in the 16th and final trial. Jockey G.R. Carter guided him to the one-and-one-quarter length win in his first start.

“He’s been good all spring,” said trainer Mike Joiner. “He didn’t get away (from the gate) well in his training race, but he got away good enough today.”

Perrys Stamina is the third-fastest qualifier with a :17.918 mark. He went off as the 5-2 favorite and came through with a one-and-one-half-length win in his first start.

The Mr Jess Perry son was purchased for $70,000 out of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale by Johnny Cope, R.D. Hubbard, Ray Willis and Butch Southway.

“He’s still a little green,” said his hall of fame trainer Sleepy Gilbreath. “He’s always been one of our better ones and I expect him to move forward off of this race.”
