Number-One Kiss My Hocks Dominates Thursday Rainbow Futurity Trials at Ruidoso

Amanda Greer

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (July 3, 2014) – Conda Maze and Tyler Graham’s Kiss My Hocks completely dominated the first day of trials to the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Futurity on Thursday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

He left no doubt who was the best horse in the 12 trials and still the sport’s premier two-year-old.

The horses with the five-fastest times on Thursday join the horses with the five-fastest times from Friday’s 12 trials in the 400-yard futurity on July 20.

Kiss My Hocks raced the 400 yards in :19.481 to win by three-and-one-half lengths as the 1-9 favorite. Second-fastest qualifier Bodacious Eagle was timed in :19.655. The time differential is the equivalent of more than one length, a considerable margin in quarter horse racing.

Kiss My Hocks should now be the strong favorite in the Rainbow Futurity.

The son of Tempting Dash won the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity by one-half length. If he can win the Rainbow Futurity and the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity, then he will become the first horse to take the $4 million All American Triple Crown Bonus. His career earnings would surpass $6 million.

Kiss My Hocks certainly looked like that is a possibility in his Rainbow Futurity trial.

“He broke out a little and really accelerated,” said winning jockey Cody Jensen. “He was flicking his ears and looking around on the lead, but he’s getting better about concentrating. He’s a clown, but a fast clown.”

The Toby Keeton-trained Kiss My Hocks is the number-one ranked two-year-old in the weekly AQHA national poll and certainly will maintain his top position this week.

Kiss My Hocks is now five for five with a win in the Grade 2, $546,000 Sam Houston Futurity and a 330-yard track record at Sam Houston Race Park to go with his Ruidoso Futurity win.

“I expected that,” Keeton said of the trial. “He just gets better. I don’t know what to say.”

Second-fastest qualifier Bodacious Eagle, owned by AQHA President Johnny Trotter, won the sixth trial by one-and-three-quarter lengths as the 1-2 favorite.

Bodacious Eagle, a son of One Famous Eagle, won his Ruidoso Futurity trial in his first start and then was third to Kiss My Hocks in the Ruidoso Futurity for trainer Blane Wood.

“We were going to pass the Rainbow (Futurity) and point at the All American Futurity,” said Trotter. “But, Blane called me last week and said he needs to run, so we ran.

“He was my pick of all of our yearlings. He reminds me of One Famous Eagle.”

The remaining Thursday qualifiers are Redemption Star (:19.662), Wild Sixes Cartel (:19.664) and Boi George (:19.667).
