One Fabulous Eagle Tops First Day of All American Futurity Qualifiers

Ty Wyant

Darling Farms’ One Fabulous Eagle overwhelmed his rivals in the 13th of 17 trials to become the day’s top qualifier to the Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity on Friday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

The All American Futurity offers the largest purse for any two-year-old horserace in the world with the winner receiving $1.5 million.

The final five qualifiers to complete the 10-horse All American Futurity on Labor Day will be determined from the 17 trials on Saturday afternoon.

While the horses with the five-fastest times on each day qualify for the All American Futurity, the horses with the next five-fastest times on each day lead the horses eligible to the $200,000 All American Juvenile. The Juvenile purse has been raised from $100,000 last year.

Four of the five qualifiers on Friday afternoon passed through the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. They averaged $41,750 and the sale average was $44,917. This year’s sale will be held on Labor Day weekend.

One Fabulous Eagle, who was timed in :21.452 for the 440 yards, raced to his second win from three career starts with his one-and-three-quarter-length trial win. His only defeat came when he was moved from fourth position to third place in the Grade 1, $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity.

“We gave him a break after the Ruidoso Futurity,” said trainer Kasey Willis. “He was in the Rainbow Futurity, but we decided to pass and point at the All American trials.”

“He’s the best horse that I’ve ever had. He doesn’t make mistakes.”

The One Famous Eagle son stood out from the moment he was born. “We called him Bullet,” said breeder Christine Hudson. “He was born the fastest of any foal we’ve ever had. He came out with just one push (from his dam Ladys Heart Of Gold). He stood up before the mare stood up and he nursed faster than any foal we’ve had.

“As a yearling, I would get on him in the pasture. He went through seven Jolly Balls (durable balls used as toys by horses).”

Steve Burns’ homebred Crooked Path continued to show her improvement with the second-fastest qualifying time :21.541. She raced to a two-length victory under L. Salvador Martinez, who will be competing in his first All American Futurity.

A daughter of Favorite Cartel from the Paul Jones stable, Crooked Path won a maiden race in her previous start. Previously, she was fourth in in her Ruidoso Futurity trial and was second in her Rainbow Futurity trial.

“She is built for the mountain (Ruidoso Downs),” said Lisa Saumell, manager of Jones’ New Mexico operation. “The Favorite Cartels are looking that they could be better the older they get. She has the size to run with the boys.”

Tf Im That Guy, a $32,000 Ruidoso Select Sale graduate, won the 17th and final trial by three quarters of a length over Giving It All. They each qualified for the futurity finals. Tf Im That Tough Guy is the third-fastest qualifier at :21.563 while Giving It All is the fifth and final qualifier from the afternoon’s trials at :21.662.

Victor Diaz’s Tf Im That Guy was third in the West Texas Futurity and won his maiden with a one-and-one-half length win in his Rainbow Futurity trial, however did not qualify for the finals. He is trained by Juan Gonzalez and was ridden by Joe Badilla Jr.

Raymond Merrill’s Giving It All was making his first start since a horrendous trip in the Ruidoso Futurity. The Walk Thru Fire-sired gelding has two trial wins from his four previous starts. He is trained by Brian Muse and was ridden by G.R. Carter Jr.

Bobby Simmons’ Sky Bo Dash, trained by Dwayne ‘Sleepy’ Gilbreath, finished fourth in the Rainbow Futurity and then came through with a scintillating three-length win in his All American Futurity trial with the day’s fourth-fastest time of :21.579.

Carter Jr. was also aboard Sky Bo Dash, a $40,000 Ruidoso Select Sale graduate, so the jockey has a decision to make for the finals. Plus, he could qualify more horses on Saturday afternoon.

Sky Bo Dash, a gelded son of Bodacious Dash, won his maiden in Rainbow Futurity trial before his fourth-place run in the finals with a late surge.
