Popular Schooling Races Set For Next Week at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 2, 2014) — The increasingly popular schooling races for some of quarter horse racing’s leading two-year-old futurity prospects will be held on Monday through Wednesday next week.

There will be 12 races on each day and the races will be divided between open non-starters, starters and New Mexico-bred starters and non-starters. Many of the juveniles with the best breeding in quarter horse racing will be participating from the stables of the sport’s leading trainers. The leading jockeys will be aboard the horses.

The training races begin at 8:30 a.m. and are free to the public. A special program will be available to identify the horses.

The schooling races will be available online with a link from

The majority of these horses are eligible for the major open Grade 1 futurities — $700,000 Ruidoso, $900,000 Rainbow and $2.6 million All American futurities — and the prime New Mexico-bred futurities, including the $350,000 (est.) Mountain Top Futurity and the $400,000 Zia Futurity. Last year, champion First Moonflash won the Zia Futurity against New Mexico-breds and then the All American Futurity.

The summer racing season begins on May 22 with the first of two days of trials to the Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity. The schooling races are well timed as a final serious preparation for the Ruidoso Futurity participants, especially the non-starters.
