Shakem Bye Perry Tops First Day All American Futurity Qualifiers

Ty Wyant

Jose Espinoza’s emerging Shakem Bye Perry was in the right race at the right time and came through with the fastest-qualifying time in the first day of trials to the Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Friday afternoon.

The second day of trials will be on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. for post time.

The horses with the five-fastest times from each day of 14 trials qualify to race in the iconic 440-yard All American Futurity on Labor Day. The horses with the next five-fastest times gain priority to compete in the $100,000 All American Juvenile on Labor Day.

Shakem Bye Perry raced in the sixth trial and rain drops started to fall when he left the winner’s circle. The track was listed as fast with a 4-mph tailwind. By the eighth race the track was listed as wet-fast and there was a 13-mph headwind. The track was sealed for the ninth trial.

Four of the five-fastest qualifiers came from the first six trials with the sixth trial also producing finalist Believe Me Irene. Then the fifth-fastest qualifier, Mr Secret Glory, came out of the 14th and final trial when the sun was shining on a wet-fast track.

Shakem Bye Perry impressed in his Ruidoso Downs debut after showing promise at Retama Park. The First Prize Perry gelding started on the lead and then drew out to the convincing one-and-one-quarter-length score. He was timed in :21.664 with Omar Reyes aboard for the first times.

The Pedro Lopez-trained Shakem Bye Perry took four starts to win his maiden and then moved up to the futurity level while qualifying for the $436,000 TQHA Sale Futurity.

“He did well at Retama,” said owner Espinosa. “In the futurity, he broke last and was bumped hard. He came from last to third. We knew we had a horse that would like 440 yards.”

Diamond Racing Stables’ Believe Me Irene was timed in :21.843 under Jose Enriquez and that stood up as the fourth-fastest time.

Shae Cox trains the Valiant Hero-sired filly who remains a maiden with a pair of seconds and a third from three starts.

Martin Ybarra’s Heza Streakin Legacy won the second trial by one length in :21.795. Edwuin Lujan picked up the mount.

The son of Heza Fast Dash won his maiden with his trial score. He was a close second in his Rainbow Futurity trial and then was a troubled eighth in the $100,000 Rainbow Juvenile.
