RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (August 2, 2014) – Stormquility looks to prove her 12-length romp at 10-1 odds in the George Wafer Memorial Stakes was note a fluke when she starts in the $50,000 Aspen Cup on Saturday (August 9) at Ruidoso Downs.
The Aspen Cup over six furlongs is for three-year-old fillies.
Owned by Steve and Stacy Uhland with Barry Koch, Stormquility ran the race of her eight-race career with her destruction of the distaff field in the Wafer at Arapahoe Park. The Ryan Stivers-trained filly went to the lead in the seven-furlong test and then steadily increased her advantage throughout the race.
That was her first win since taking her maiden in her career debut at Arapahoe Park last summer.
Michael Ziegler rode Stormquility for the first time in the Wafer and he retains the mount with the sixth post position.
Class Racing Stables’ Awesome Dama was the 9-5 favorite in the Wafer and will try to rebound from a fourth-place finish in the Aspen Cup. The Bart Hone-trained miss earned that favoritism after winning an optional-claiming race at six furlongs at Sunland Park and then finishing second as the odds-on choice in the six-and-one-half furlong Budweiser Allowance at SunRay Park.
Alfredo Juarez Jr. rides Awesome Dama with the third post position.
Teed Off Stables LLC’s Belleofthebeach returns to the stakes ranks after two impressive gate-to-wire wins against lesser company at Sunland Park. She won a six-furlong optional-claiming race by eight-and-one-quarter lengths and then took a one-mile allowance race by six-and-one-quarter lengths.
Trainer Weston Martin will have Irwin Rosendo up when they start from the inside post position.
