Training Races Monday-Wednesday at Ruidoso Downs

Ty Wyant

The next quarter horse superstar could easily be running in the 40 Ruidoso Downs’ training races at Ruidoso Downs next Monday through Wednesday (May 9-11) beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The 300-yard training races are free to the public and a special program will be available. First post time each day is 8:30 a.m. Programs will be available.

Overnights are available at http://www.raceruidoso.com/overnights-1/ on the Ruidoso Downs’ website.

Previous competitors in the training races include all-time leading money earner and All American Futurity winner Ochoa, All American Futurity winner Jm Miracle, Texas Classic Futurity winner Kates Dynasty and 10-time Grade 1 competitor Hez Our Secret. They all went on to earn championship honors.

Many of the juveniles with the best breeding in quarter horse racing from the stables of the sport’s leading trainers will be participating. The leading jockeys will ride the horses.

Bellissima Chocolata topped the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale last September at $300,000 and will be competing in the fourth race on Wednesday. She is daughter of Valiant Hero and two-time champion Heartswideopen.

Heartswideopen earned $1.8 million at Ruidoso Downs with wins in the All American Futurity, Ruidoso Futurity, Ruidoso Derby and the Rainbow Derby.

Ricky Ramirez will ride Bellissima Chocolata for trainer Blane Wood.

The majority of the horses in the training races will be preparing for the Grade 1, $1 million Ruidoso Futurity; Grade 1, $1 million Rainbow Futurity and Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity. The All American Futurity offers the largest purse of any two-year-old race in the world and any quarter horse race.

The training races are run on these days so they can serve as final preparation for horses racing in the Ruidoso Futurity trials. The 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity trials will be held on May 27-28.

The season begins on May 27 and concludes on Labor Day with the running of the All American Futurity.
