Trials For Zia Weekend Stakes Dominate Saturday Ruidoso Program

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (July 5, 2014) – Trials for three stakes races held on Zia Festival weekend dominate the Saturday afternoon program at Ruidoso Downs.

The Zia Festival will be held on July 26-27 with all of the races for New Mexico-breds and the grandstand will be filled with vendors offering New Mexican and Southwestern wares. The Zia Festival is one of the most popular weekends of the Ruidoso summer season.

Juvenile thoroughbred fillies run in the trials to the $198,975 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity, two-year-old thoroughbred males race in the $154,380 Rio Grande Senor Futurity trials and three-year-old quarter horses will compete in the trials to the $139,493 Zia Quarter Horse Derby.

The Rio Grande Senorita Futurity trials at five-and-one-half furlongs attracted Copper Top Futurity Filly division winner Miss BRH. The Fred Danley-trained miss won by three-and-three-quarter lengths in April at Sunland Park. She then ran third in the Kendrick Memorial at SunRay Park.

Miss BRH starts from the seventh post position in the seventh race with Alfredo Juarez Jr.aboard.

The Rio Grande Senor Futurity trials, also at five-and-one-half furlongs, features $156,000 Mountain Top Futurity winner Lux. The Todd-Fincher-trained Lux raced near the lead in the Mountain Top and then pulled away in the stretch to win by one-and-one-half lengths. The gelding now has two wins and a second from three starts.

Ruby Gonzalez, who was up for the Mountain Top win, is aboard with the eighth post position in the eighth race.

The Zia Quarter Horse Derby trials presents an interesting third race with recent Grade 1, $943,000 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Derby fourth-place finisher Dm One Hot Charmer lining up against last year’s $357,000 Mountain Top Futurity winner Heza Wild Dragon.

Dm One Hot Charmer starts from the third post position with G.R. Carter Jr. up while Heza Wild Dragon drew the eighth post position and has Ricky Ramirez aboard.
