Zuccardi Looks To Pay Dividend In Mountain Top Futurity on Saturday

Amanda Greer

RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (June 7, 2014) – Crowson Racing’s fastest-qualifier Zuccardi looks for a sizable return on the $15,000 supplemental fee paid to enter the trials when he heads the Restricted Grade 3, $340,654 Mountain Top Futurity on Saturday (June 14).

The winner’s share of the 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity is $143,074.

First post time is 1 p.m. with the Mountain Top Futurity for New Mexico-breds running as the final race on the nine-race card.

There is always free parking and free general admission at Ruidoso Downs.

Zuccardi was supplemented to the Mountain Top Futurity trials despite finishing a very troubled eighth in his first start, a Sunland Park futurity trial. He was then dropped into a Ruidoso Downs’ schooling race and showed his connections his potential when he daylighted his rivals. That’s when Crowson Racing decided to pay the supplemental fee.

A $38,000 purchase at last summer’s New Mexico-Bred Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Sale, Zuccardi stunned his trial opponents by two-and-three-quarter lengths and his time of :17.258 for the 350 yards topped the 10 trials.

Zuccardi, a son of Jesse James Jr, is one of four horses in the Mountain Top Futurity bred by MJ Farms. The colt is out of Champagne Lane, the producer of champion Alice K White and former world record holder Kendall Jackson.

Roman Chapa rides Zuccardi with the fourth post position for trainer Anna Marie Crowson.

Jose Ozuna’s Moonstruck Love also stepped forward in his trial for trainer Paul Jones. He followed a fourth-place finish in his Sam Houston Futurity trial back in March with a hard-fought neck win in his Mountain Top Futurity trial over qualifier Quemados Version.

Moonstruck Love came through with the second-fastest time of :17.383 while Quemados Version raced to the fourth-fastest time of :17.413.

Juan Daguer’s Quemados Version was the 3-5 favorite in the trial after a fifth-place finish in the $212,450 New Mexican Spring Futurity at Sunland Park.

Moonstruck Love starts from the seventh post position with Esgar Ramirez up while Quemados Version will have Jaime Parga-Leos aboard with the third post position.
