Miguel Gallegos and Mauricio Gallegos’ Hotsempting dominated the fourth of 13 trials and established the fastest-qualifying time to the Grade 1, $1-million Rainbow Futurity during the first of two days of trials on Friday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.
The horses with the top-five times from Friday’s trials qualified to compete against the top-five qualifiers from Saturday’s 13 trials in the 400-yard Rainbow Futurity on July 21.
The horses with next five-fastest times on each day qualify to compete in the $100,000 Rainbow Juvenile, also on July 21.
First post time for Saturday’s trials is noon.
Racing resumes a regular 1 p.m. first post time on Sunday with the 10 trials to the Grade 1, $1,008,129 Rainbow Derby. The Rainbow Derby trials feature champion, multimillionaire and All American Futurity winner Apocalyptical Jess coming off a win in the Grade 1, $958,766 Ruidoso Derby. Also in the trials are 2018 champion two-year-old Flash and Roll, who races against Apocalyptical Jess in the fifth trial, and 2018 champion two-year-old colt Flying Cowboy 123.
Hotsempting raced to an excellent start from the outside post position in her trial. She then easily accelerated and drew away to win by three-and-three-quarter lengths under jockey Esgar Ramirez. She was timed in :19.512 for the 400 yards.
A $49,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, Hotsempting was the odds-on favorite after proving to be a top futurity competitor. She made her debut in the trials to the Grade 1, $1-million Ruidoso Futurity on May 24 and posted the day’s fourth-fastest qualifying time. She came back in the Ruidoso Futurity to get a slightly tardy start from the outside post position and never engaged her rivals to finish seventh.
Hotsempting showed she can start from the outside post position in her Rainbow Futurity trial with her excellent start.
“I was expecting this,” trainer Jose Luis Muela said. “I was confident. She has been training really well and I want to thank the Lord.”
Df Mischievious Jess Partners’ Df Mischievious Jess powered away from his rivals in the 11th trial to establish the second-fastest qualifying time of 19.755.
The Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo-ridden Df Mischievious Jess easily won by one-and-three-quarter lengths over Ruidoso Futurity qualifier Lil Miss Sashay.
Trained by James Padgett, II, Df Mischievious Jess was supplemented to the Rainbow Futurity trials at a cost of $30,000 after a promising career start at Remington Park. The son of Apollitical Jess won his Heritage Place Futurity trial and then finished third in the $100,000 Heritage Place Juvenile.
The remaining qualifiers from the first day of trials are Ratification (:19.785), Jesses Dashair (:19.796) and Dash For Glitter (:19.824).
