RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (May 17, 2018) — Fearless Champion, the 13-year-old mascot of Texas Tech University, and “Masked Rider” Lyndi Star will appear at Ruidoso Downs Race Track for “Red Raider Weekend” June 2.
“This promises to be a highlight of my summer,” the 22-year-old Star said. Star is an agricultural communications major at Texas Tech going into her senior year. “I have always been interested in riding and training race horses, and this will be a very exciting event for us.” The race track has created the special weekend to attract Texas Tech students, alumni and racing fans. Star and Fearless Champion will lead the post parade for the feature race that afternoon as well make an appearance on the track earlier in the day.
“Our fans from west Texas are supportive of our race track and we want to show them how much we appreciate them as well,” president and general manager Jeff True said. “We hope to create an annual event that salutes Texas Tech and what it means to this region. We invite everyone to come and see the Masked Rider and Fearless Champion in action.”
In addition to the appearance, Ruidoso Downs will feature a Texas Tech-based band, Flatland Cavalry, in concert on Saturday evening, June 2. The band is popular throughout the region for original country-driven songs. Tickets are $20 in advance at 575-378-4140.
Originally from Mount Vernon, Texas, Starr is the 57th Masked Rider. She said she intends to use her communications and agricultural background to promote the university. She also hopes to be a positive role model and leader to those who aspire to one day wear the mask and cape in Lubbock.
“I believe being the Masked Rider is about far more than attending football games,” Starr said. “I want to spread the school spirit that brings West Texans together as a family, and I want to inspire others to attend college, set goals and go after them.”
This will be the current Fearless Champion’s seventh season with the Texas Tech spirit program and first appearance at Ruidoso Downs Race Track.
General Admission to the race track if free, and children are welcome to attend the horse races that day. For more information, visit the Ruidoso Downs Race Track website,
