New Mexico’s Mike Smith will ride five horses this weekend in the Breeder’s Cup World Championships to be held Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita Race Course.
Ruidoso Downs Race Track will conduct simulcast wagering on the races each day. Wagers may be made on Friday for Saturday’s races.
Free seating is available in the simulcast area inside Billy’s Sports Bar and Grill. Mutuel windows open at 9 a.m.
Smith is expected to ride Yoshida (JPN) in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Classic. The 5- year-old won the 2018 Woodward Stakes and finished second to McKinzie in the Whitney Stakes this summer. Yoshida will be number-five in the race and is 8-1 on the morning line.
Ruidoso Downs will conduct a handicapping contest on Saturday’s Classic. Patrons will select a horse in the race and a random drawing will be held among those who picked the winner to collect $500. There is no purchase necessary.
Smith rides Omaha Beach, the 8-5 favorite to win the Dirt Mile on Saturday. That horse was favored to win the Kentucky Derby in May before scratching out of the race. Smith is also favored to win the Distaff on 6-5 choice Midnight Bisou and will ride 20-1 morning-line longshot Hog Creek Hussle in the Sprint.
On Friday, Smith rides Scabbard in the Juvenile and is 8-1 on the morning line. For more information about the weekend’s races from Santa Anita, visit www.breederscup.com.
