Ruidoso Sprint Handicap, Strong Allowance Race Sunday at Ruidoso Downs

Champion Racing Stable’s Wilmas Irish Rover in a contentious $30,000 Ruidoso Sprint Handicap over five-and-one-half furlongs is the stakes headliner on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

Supporting the Ruidoso Spring Handicap is Mark and Annette McCloy’s Rainbow Futurity winner Mm Fourinthemorning returning in a deep 350-yard allowance race.

Wilmas Irish Rover comes into the Ruidoso Sprint Handicap off a convincing allowance race win over six furlongs when he won in wire-to-wire fashion. The gelding will be running one-half furlong shorter in the Ruidoso Sprint Handicap.

“He ran well at six furlongs so we’ll try five-and-one-half furlongs,” trainer Casey Lambert said. “He’s doing well.”

The four-year-old gelding has finished in the top-three runners in each of his latest nine starts at distances from six furlongs to one-mile-and-seventy yards.

Isaias Enriquez will ride Wilmas Irish Rover from the second post position.

Larry Teague and Harry Teague’s Rig Time will be making his second start within a week in the Ruidoso Sprint Handicap. Last Sunday, the gelding stumbled at the start and tried to go five-wide before finishing fifth in an allowance race.

Two starts, ago, Rig Time finished third at 3-1 odds in the $85,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap over four-and-one-half furlongs against New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.

Trainer Weston Martin will have Juan Ochoa ride Rig Time with the sixth post position.

In the allowance race, Mm Fourinthemorning makes his first start since a fifth-place run as the favorite in last Labor Day’s Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity.

The Trey Wood-trained Mm Fourinthemorning earned that favoritism after a three-quarter-length win in the Grade 1, $1-million Rainbow Futurity and then dominating his All American Futurity trial by two-and-one-quarter lengths.

Ricky Ramirez rides Mm Fourinthemorning from the seventh post position.

Also in the deep allowance race are Ruidoso Futurity runner-up Suze Returns, Golden State Million Futurity runner-up Jess Macho Corona and Oklahoma Futurity third-place finisher Sc Money Maker.
