Famous N Relentless, Russ Gus Return in Trials for the $1 Million Rainbow Futurity
THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2025
Trainer Jason Olmstead certainly did not get his money’s worth in the finals of the Rainbow Futurity earlier this summer at Ruidoso Downs.

“We didn’t get to play,” Jason recalled about his two-year-old Famous N Relentless that was scratched by stewards at the gate moments before the June 8 final.
“The horse in the starting gate next to us all-of-a-sudden flipped and started kicking our horse from underneath,” Jason said. “We were fortunate that he wasn’t hurt. He was so fresh and ready to fire that day.”
Olmstead, his wife Amber, and co-owner Tom Maher had put up a $30,000 supplement fee to enter the horse in the Ruidoso Futurity and be disappointed in the final. Their story continues this weekend however, as the gelding was supplemented once again—this time $40,000-- to enter the trials of the $1 million Rainbow Futurity to be held Friday and Saturday.
“This horse hasn’t done a thing wrong and it wasn’t his fault,” Jason said. "He’s telling us that he’s ready to go again and we feel like he’s developing into a very nice race horse. We’ll see what happens in the Rainbow trials.”
Famous N Relentless will be number-five in Saturday’s eleventh trial race with jockey Ramiro Haro Garcia taking the mount once again. The horse is 5/2 on the morning line.

On Friday, Russ Gus and jockey Luis Martinez will be number-seven in the seventh race attempting to make the finals of the Rainbow following a runner-up finish in the Ruidoso Futurity final behind stablemate Political Twist who is skipping the second leg of the Triple Crown to be fresh for the All American trials in August.
“Now that Russ Gus has a couple of races under his belt he should be racing with much more experience,” trainer Xavier Rodriguez said. He is owned by Danil Miranda who purchased Rus Guss at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale for $100,000 last fall.
“He’s been doing so well in training. We believe that he’ll be ready to fire in the Rainbow trials,” Xavier said. Russ Gus is 2-1 as the morning line favorite in his trial.
There are several new faces in the Rainbow Futurity trials starting lineup this weekend including Effortless Favorite, winner of the Grade-1 Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park May 31. Jason also trains this youngster for Tom and Bill Maher and Richard Tobin. Francisco Raul Ramirez Jr. will ride Effortless Favorite as number-one in race three on Friday as the 2-1 favorite.
There are sixteen futurity trial races both days with an early first post at 11 a.m. each day. The quarter horses with the top-ten fastest times will advance to the finals of the Rainbow Futurity on Sunday, July 13.
