Tell A Scout Will Try to Keep Jockey Ramirez in the Winner’s Circle In the $1 Million Ruidoso Futurity Sunday at Downs of Albuquerque
THURSDAY, JUNE 4
(Albuquerque, NM) Veteran Ricky Ramirez, winning rider of last season’s $3 million All American Futurity aboard King of the Tide, will ride two-year-old Tell A Scout in the finals of the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity at 350-yards on Sunday at the Downs of Albuquerque.
“Both horses are similar in talent,” Ricky said. “I’m getting the same feeling about this horse as I did last year with the champ. I know it’s early in the season, but I thought my horse really got moving late. He’s going to like 440-yards later in the summer.”
Tell A Scout, number-five on Sunday, won the thirteenth and final trial on Friday, May 22 to qualify for the finals in a time of 17.356 seconds in a seven mile-per-hour headwind. Tell A Scout has two wins in three attempts for owners Mark and Annette McCloy.
The filly Ask Her To Fly and jockey Ramiro Garcia , number-four, recorded the fastest time the same day in trial-six, 17.120 seconds in a similar headwind. The filly also has two wins in three trips to the racetrack.
“This filly has quickly figured out the break,” trainer Jason Olmstead said. “Physically, Ask Her To Fly is small in stature but very light on her feet. She’s shown us some natural ability thus far.”
The Ruidoso Futurity is the ninth race scheduled to be run at 4:50 p.m. in Albuquerque. The race will be simulcast at Ruidoso Downs and broadcast live on the Cowboy Channel nationwide.
Saturday’s running of the $750,000 Ruidoso Derby at 400-yards features Flying Chance and jockey Joseph Belloc, Jr. for trainer James Gonzales III. The gelding will be number-five going for a fourth career victory. Flying Chance finished third in last season’s All American Juvenile for owner Clint Fuller.
Saturday will be the first time a triple crown race has been run at night under lights in Albuquerque. The Ruidoso Derby will be the tenth race on the card with post time scheduled for 9:50 p.m.
