Chile Gato Fastest in Day-One Trials For $3 Million All American Futurity

at Downs of ABQ

(Albuquerque, NM) Chile Gato, a two-year-old dual-registered quarter and paint horse, was quickest to qualify for the $3 million All American Futurity for two-year-olds on Friday in a time of 20.911 for 440-yards at the Downs of Albuquerque.

The colt won the eighth trial of the day by one-and-a-quarter lengths as an 18-1 longshot and paid $38.40, $22.16 and $7.60. Omar Paredes of Austin, Texas, is the owner-breeder and Jed Vane is the trainer. Francisco Calderon was the winning rider. Chile Gato’s sire is Chilitos out of the mare Famous Phoebe by Dash To Fame.

Ask Her To Fly and jockey Ramiro Haro Garcia, also a finalist in both the Ruidoso and Rainbow Futurities earlier this season, ran second in the same trial with a time of 21.100 seconds. Both horses qualified for the final to be held on Labor Day, Sept. 7. The filly is owned and bred by Randall Geiselman of Midland, Texas, and trained by Jason Olmstead. Ask Her To Fly’s sire is Flying Cowboy 123 out of the mare Ask the Question by Teller Cartel.

Cowboys Flying was the most impressive winner of the day. With jockey Nestor Duran aboard the gelding won the fourteenth trial by three-and-three-quarters lengths in a time of 21.019 seconds while racing in a fifteen-mile-per-hour crosswind.

“He didn’t break well, but after about fifty-yards just took off,” Nester said in the winner’s circle.” Cowboys Flying was supplemented into the futurity by owners Jaime Cardenas and Jerry Deville Jr. of Double J Racing after having won two futurity stakes races in Texas. Cowboys Flying won the Texas Breeder’s Futurity at Houston on May 9, and the TQHA Futurity at Retama Park in San Antonio on July 25. Cowboys Flying remains undefeated in five races and is sired is Flying Cowboy 123 out of the mare Cartels Lady by Carters Cartel.
