Sicario V and Cyber Attack Top Qualifiers During Rainbow Derby Trials at Ruidoso Downs

Sicario V and Cyber Attack took advantage of a fast-drying race track from earlier rains in the day to win and qualify during the last two trials for the $800,000 (est) Rainbow Derby for three-year-old quarter horses Sunday at Ruidoso Downs Race Track.

Eight of the ten quarter horses that will go postward in the July 15th derby final qualified in the 14th and 15th races of the day. Sicario V posted a time of 21.338 for 440-yards in the 14th race, and Cyber Attack ran the same distance in 21.443 seconds.

“I could tell the track condition was improving late,” jockey Francisco Calderon said. “Sicario V came out fast and that was as sharp as he’s been since I’ve been riding him.”

“We had the goal of simply qualifying for the final,” Cyber Attack’s jockey Eduardo Nicasio said. “We weren’t looking for the fastest time today but just to get into the top ten.”

Both quarter horses were heavily favored in their respective races. Sicario V paid $3.20, $2.60 and $2.20, while Cyber Attack paid $2.20, $2.10 and $2.10.

Sicario V is owned by Valeriano Racing Stables and trained by Santos Carrizales Jr. The gelding is sired by Favorite Cartel out of the mare Nymph by Foose.

Cyber Attack is owned by Rosenthal Ranch and trained by Chris O’Dell. The colt is sired by Favorite Cartel out of the mare Remember Me Rose by Corona Cartel.

Other quarter horses that qualified for the Rainbow Derby final include: Lethal Viking in 21.472 seconds, Ghost Witha Fire in 21.500 seconds, Chasing AJ in 21.528 seconds, Scorpion Dynasty in 21.533 seconds, Aristides in 21.545 seconds, Hooked N Gone in 21.599 seconds, Town Peak Senator in 21.606 seconds and KJ Bootscootin Jess in 21.663 seconds.

Fearless Moon, a three-year-old quarter horse filly, was the fastest qualifier during trials for the $480,000 (est) Rainbow Oaks.

With jockey Sergio Becerra Jr. aboard, Fearless Moon won the 6th race in a time of 21.530 seconds for Gentry Farms and trainer John Stinebaugh. The filly is sired by First Moonflash out of the mare Heartbeat by Tres Seis.
